[Ferro-Alloys.com] Tenova Mining and Minerals announced on Aug 15th that its furnace specialist, Tenova Pyromet, has been awarded a contract by United Silicon, Iceland, to build a 32 MW silicon metal furnace. This is the first silicon metal furnace to be established in Iceland and, as the second such furnace project under execution by Tenova Pyromet in Europe, reinforces the company’s position as a furnace supplier of choice in Europe.Due for completion in mid 2016, the contract includes the raw material handling and off gas cleaning systems and covers design, supply, supervision, process and equipment guarantees.
The furnace will have one of the lowest carbon footprints for furnaces in the world, made possible by a combination of Iceland’s and United Silicon’s commitment to clean energy and Tenova Pyromet’s advanced technologies. In accordance with engineering best practice, it will also have the capability to produce steam, using energy in the off gas. Incorporating BAT (Best Available Technology) aspects in its design, the furnace is set to become a global benchmark for the industry in maximising production, while reducing emissions and operating costs.
