CALCIUM CARBIDE (CaC2) : It is a grey to reddish-brown crystalline material consisting a mixture of CaC2 and CaO. Commercial calcium carbide consists of 75-85 % CaC2 inside. It is mainly used for acetylene gas production, calcium cyanamide fertilizer production and in the steel industry as a desulphurizing agent. It is produced in a submerged electric arc furnace with raw materials such as coke and unburnt lime. Besides coke, petrocoke and some other carbon sources are used to maintain the high quality. To produce aone ton of calcium carbide 80 % CaC2 around 3 Mwh energy is required. One kilogram of 80 % CaC2 when reacts with water can produce 295 lt of acetylene gas (C2H2).
