[Ferro-Alloys.com]The spot price of 60%-grade high-carbon ferrochrome imported into Japan at 86-88 cents/lb CIF Japan Friday, January 30, unchanged for the seventh week running on deals reported were for small lots of 20-100 mt.
Two deals were reported closing this week at 87 cents/lb CIF Japan for lot sizes of 20-100 mt, February loading from Visakpatnam or Paradeep port in India.
The deals were for 10-50 mm of lumps (60% chrome minimum, 8% carbon maximum, 3% silicon maximum, 0.04% phosphorous maximum, 0.05% sulfur maximum).
Meanwhile, a Japanese steelmaker bought over 5,000 mt of 3-10 mm granules (44-50% chrome, 8% carbon maximum, 4% silicon maximum, 0.04% phosphorous maximum, 0.05% sulfur maximum) at 71-73 cents/lb CIF Japan, for March loading, said sources familiar with the deal.
The material origin was not available.
Platts does not assess prices of non-lump material such as granules and fines.
Although spot prices of lumps stayed stable at 86-88 cents/lb CIF Japan for two months, producer, trader and consumer sources said Japanese demand outlook was weak.
"There are more requirements from the mills for fines," said a Tokyo trader.
A mill source said Japanese stainless steel exports were facing price competition challenges and the mills were trying to keep raw material costs down.
