On September 2nd, 2011, Calisolar Inc. (Sunnyvale, California, U.S.) announced plans to build a new polysilicon production facility with an annual capacity of 16,000 metric tons in Lowndes County in the U.S. state of Mississippi.
The new USD 600 million plant will produce silicon metal for internal consumption and solar silicon to be sold to Calisolar customers. Calisolar made the announcement the same day that the Mississippi legislature approved a USD 75 million incentive package for the plant.
“We’ve demonstrated that our low-cost silicon can produce high-performance solar cells, now sold commercially, which has been an important step in the growth of our company," said Calisolar Board Executive Chairman John Correnti.
"Now, our focus is on expanding silicon production capacity – where we have the greatest competitive cost advantage – and achieving further cost savings.”
Plant to bring 951 full-time jobs
SMS Siemag AG (Germany) will supply the majority of the equipment to be installed at the new facility. Zachry Holdings Inc. (San Antonio, Texas, U.S.) will engineer and build the facility along with several local Mississippi construction firms.
Mississippi Governor Haley Barbour pushed for the passage of the incentives for the plant. The Governor's office estimates that the plant will bring 951 direct full-time jobs at annual salary of USD 45,000 plus benefits.
Polysilicon is by far the United State's largest export to the global PV industry at USD 2.55 billion in 2010. The nation is also the world's second largest polysilicon supplier after China, producing 25% of the global supply of the material.
