Vale has shut down its ferro-alloys plants in Brazil’s Minas Gerais State as high energy prices made it economically unviable to operate them, the company said on Wednesday April 22.
Total ferro-alloy production fell to 27,000 tonnes in the first quarter of 2015, down from 46,000 tonnes in the same period of 2014. Ferro-silicon manganese alloys (FeSiMn) accounted for 12,000 tonnes, followed by 9,000 tonnes of high-carbon manganese alloys (FeMnHc) and 5,000 tonnes of medium-carbon manganese alloys (FeMnMC).
