There is huge interest from mining companies in the Northern Cape Province in South Africa to export manganese ore via Lüderitz harbour.
Lüderitz port manager Max Kooper revealed this when a New Era journalist visited the harbour.
He indicated the port facilitates the importation and exportation of goods at the coastal town and future plans are to extend and improve the current infrastructure of the port. According to Kooper, Lüderitz has a shallow port with a draft of 8.15 metres.
NamPort has also embarked on rail infrastructure development within the port, which is in the final stages of construction.
“The tender was already awarded and work has begun on the project. We anticipate to complete the railway inside the port by end of August this year,” he elaborated.
He said the harbour currently only uses a third of its maximum carrying capacity and NamPort is looking at ways and means to further optimize the port.
“There is a great interest from the Northern Cape to export manganese via Lüderitz,” said the port manager.
He also said grape farmers at Aussenkehr are interested in making use of the port as well though there are still a few logistical issues being ironed out.
Kooper stressed the need to purchase special equipment and also to train their employees because of the nature of the products.
The Aussenkehr grape industry is estimated to be worth N$2 billion.
He further explained that the development of Angra Point deepwater port would enable bigger vessels to use Namibia en-route to other international destinations.
Kooper noted the completion of the railway link would translate into additional throughput capacity and make the port more competitive.
The port is used to export zinc ingots and for importing sulphur for Skorpion Zinc.
From Rosh Pinah zinc mine the port handles zinc and lead concentrate.
It also handles fish and diesel, which is mainly imported for the fishing industry.
