[Ferro-Alloys.com]Malaysia's Pertama Ferroalloys plans to commission its ferrosilicon furnace in May, more than five years after the company was established, a project stakeholder told Platts Friday.

Pertama was established in December 2010 to produce 60,000 mt/year of ferrosilicon and 40,000 mt/year of silicomanganese at Samalaju Industrial Park in Sarawak.

In 2011, the company signed long-term power purchase agreement with Sarawak Energy and plant construction works started in 2012.

The commissioning of the silicomanganese plant was initially scheduled for the fourth quarter of 2013.

Plant construction works have progressed slower than expected as demand of bulk ferroalloys weakened, said the source.

Pertama has changed its plan and will launch ferrosilicon production first, followed by silicomanganese, as profit margin for ferrosilicon is larger than that of silicomanganese, the source added.

Platts assessed spot price of ferrosilicon imports into Japan at $1,000-$1,010/mt CIF Japan this week, while silicomanganese stood at $630-$640/mt CIF Japan.

Pertama Ferroalloys is 60% owned by Hong Kong's Asia Minerals Limited, 25% by Japanese ferromanganese producer Nippon Denko, 8% by Malaysia-based Carbon Capital, 7% by Japanese trading company Shinko Shoji.

Pertama will be the second ferrosilicon producer in Malaysia.

OM Holdings has brought on-stream the country's first ferrosilicon plant in September 2014.

The 308,000 mt/year plant has not reached full capacity yet, according to the company's website.

OM also produces manganese ore but mining operations at its Australian mine were suspended in December 2015 due to poor market conditions.
