[Ferro-Alloys.com]OM Materials (Sarawak) Sdn Bhd-owned ferrosilicon alloy smelting plant in Samalaju Industrial Park, Bintulu has continued to ramp up its production as more new smelting facilities are commissioned.
Physical construction of the production facilities under phase 1 is now fully completed. Phase 1 comprises eight main workshops equipped with 16 units of 25.5 MVA furnaces with a design production capacity of 308,000 tonnes of ferrosilicon alloys per annum.
OM Sarawak is a 75-25 joint venture between Australian listed OM Holdings Ltd (OMH) and Cahya Mata Sarawak Bhd’s wholly-owned subsidiary Samalaju Industries Sdn Bhd.
According to OMH, two more workshops completed testing and cold commissioning in the October-December (2015) quarter, and these new smelting facilities are expected to commence commercial production once the market environment improves.
In the quarter under review, the plant raised its production to 43,941 tonnes from 14,762 tonnes in the July-September quarter or by nearly 30%.
“OM Sarawak continues to improve the operating efficiency and cost effectiveness of each furnace currently in production.
The production output of ferrosilicon continues to move towards meeting the nameplate production capacity of 308,000 tonnes of ferrosilicon alloy per annum,” said OMH in the latest update on OM Sarawak when releasing its fourth-quarter 2015 results.
During the fourth quarter, 16,916 tonnes of ferrosilicon from OM Sarawak were sold. The company has three off-take partners – Japan-based Hanwa Co Ltd and JFE Shoji Trade Corp and Fesil Sales AS,Norway. (Business news)
