It is reported that Anglo Platinum officials are discussing the prospect of setting up a 500,000 tpy ferro-chrome smelter in South Africa, fed by the company’s own UG2 chrome ore, as it responds to plans to impose a tax on chrome ore exports.
“Up to now, as a platinum producer, we have not been interested in getting into the ferro-chrome game, but now we are seriously starting to look at this as an option in the light of the ferro-chrome producers lobbying for an export tax,” Tim Aiken, general manager for marketing in Anglo Platinum, told Metal Bulletin. He was referring to controversial proposals by ferro-chrome producers to have an export tax imposed on chrome ore.
