According to figures released by the Brazilian Steel Association, Brazilian steel mills increased production in December.
Brazil produced 2.89 million tons of steel in December 2020, an increase of 17% over December 2019; Steel production was 2.95 million tons in November.
Brazilian steel production fell 4.9% to 30.97 million tons in 2020.
The drop in output was due to the shutdown of blast furnaces and other equipment shortly after the country announced social isolation measures in March last year, this situation only improved at the beginning of the second half of the year.
Brazil’s steel sales rose 28% to 1.83 million tons in December from a year earlier. In 2020, the cumulative increase was 2.4% to 19.25 million tons.
Brazilian steel sales are expected to grow to 19.9 million tons in 2021, the Brazilian Steel Association said in late November.
