According to the latest five-year plan (fiscal year 2021-2025, April 2021-March 2026), Japan's largest steelmaker plans to cut domestic steel production by 20% or 10 million tons to 40 million tons in the next five fiscal years to cope with weak demand and environmental pressure. The reduction includes previously announced capacity restructuring projects.

The large blast furnace with a capacity of 5370 cubic meters and its supporting facilities will be shut down by March 2025, but the No .1 blast furnace located in the same plant area and with the same furnace capacity will continue to operate.
In addition, the new Japan Railway will also Kansai Steel Plant and Geshan Plant No .1 blast furnace scheduled to close one year ahead of schedule to September 2021.
