IMF Asks Indonesia to Lift the Nickel Export Ban
The Executive Board of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) asked the Indonesian government to lift the gradual ban on nickel exports. This was revealed in a release published on the IMF website on 25 June 2023.
The IMF Executive Board understands Indonesia’s diversification steps which focus on downstreaming raw mineral commodities such as nickel. And the Indonesian Government’s steps to increase added value for exports, efforts to attract foreign direct investment and transfer of skills such as technology are also appreciated. In addition, it is deemed necessary to make policy-making with a mechanism for further cost and benefit analysis as well as minimizing the impact on other countries.
“In that context, the (Executive Council) calls on to consider gradually removing export restrictions and not extending restrictions on other commodities,” he was quoted as saying on the IMF’s official website, Tuesday (27 June).
