[Ferro-alloys.com]After Beijing-Tian-Hebei Region, Yangtze River Delta and Pearl River Delta suffered from haze, Southeast of China was also haunted this week. Aviation, railway and highway traffic were hindered severely.

How did this malevolent haze come out? Environmental protection department analyzed that current pollution was caused by meteorological condition, winter coal-fired heating, vehicle exhaust pollution and straw burning.

There was no doubt that atmospheric pollution of China was long-term accumulated and this serious smog revealed the unreasonable energy development mode and structural contradiction obviously. China was the biggest power consumer of the world and it burned about 0.8 billion mt of coal directly. Coal-fired exhaust was the main source of atmospheric pollution. There existed a sharp contradiction between atmospheric pollution control and energy consumption growth which accompanied by economic development. To improve air quality fundamentally, the policy of multi-strategies must be adopted and the government should hit the mark. We must focus on the transformation of energy development mode, promote economic transformation & upgrading and boost the construction of ecological civilization comprehensively.

The central committee of CPC and State Council attached great importance to the prevention and control of atmospheric pollution. It was put forward explicitly recently that we must speed up the adjustment of energy structure and increase the supply of clean energy. Compared with coal, oil and natural gas, electricity was more convenient, safe and clean. This determined that we must adhere to the concept of electricity-centered when adjusting energy consumption structure dominated by coal.

Research suggested that if electricity portion in terminal energy consumption was increased by 1%, overall energy consumption could be lowered by 6.2%. Conversion efficiency and emission of electricity was much better than that of coal and oil in terminal consumption. If coal was converted to electricity locally and centralized control was taken, the environmental effect was far beyond the reach of dispersed burning. It would be of great significant to atmospheric pollution emission control if more coal and oil were replaced by electricity.
