Finnish steel major Outokumpu on Tuesday said it has won 700 tonne order in India and plans to focus on selling premium grade steel to nuclear and thermal power projects in the country.
Besides, it plans to make thrust in areas such as oil and gas industry and coastal bridges.
"Outokumpu's main focus in India has been to support the needs for high-end stainless steel grade products in critical fields of emerging infrastructure namely oil & gas, energy, nuclear and thermal plants, water treatment and desalination industries," the company said in a statement.
It said the company has won order for supplying 700 tonne of high performance heat resistant grade of steel to Thermax Ltd for the construction of a thermal power plant inIndia.
"Outokumpu has been closely working with Thermax in many of their boiler projects for thermal power plants. Components manufactured from this high-temperature grade chosen by Thermax are used for a specific part of the boiler, known as "impact separators," said Yatinder Suri, Head, Outokumpu Sales in India.
Executive Vice President at Thermax, Rajan Nair said: "For our project of supplying and commissioning 9 circulating fluidised bed combustion boilers for a petrochemical complex in India, we chose Outokumpu..."
Suri said the overall demand level of stainless steel flat products for industrial segment in India is around 400,000 tonne.
The demand for industrial grades is set to grow 3-4 times in 8-10 years he said, adding: "In the absence of domestic capability to manufacture high-end reliable range of stainless steel for hostile industrial applications, Outokumpu has a major role to play in India."
