[www.ferro-alloys.com] South Korea’s largest steelmaker Posco Co. announced on Monday that it became the first among local steel mills to turn out 0.8 millimeter thick hot-rolled coil.

A hot-rolled coil currently used is usually 1.2 millimeters thick. As a 0.8 millimeter thick hot-rolled coil needs 33 percent more pressure than typical 1.2 millimeter thick product, it requires different rolling method.

Hot rolling is a mill process which involves rolling the steel at a high temperature, which is above the steel’s recrystallization temperature. The steelmaker was able to make thinner hot-rolled coil by utilizing its own Compact Endless Cast & Rolling Mill (CEM) technology, an advanced process technology that allows mass production of highly valuable hot-rolled products through a directly connected configuration between a casting and rolling line.

The 0.8 millimeter thick hot-rolled coil products could be applied for automotive interior panels, motor cores, household appliance parts and pipes and help to save costs for both the steelmaker and its corporate clients.

The company also will attempt production of a 0.75 millimeter hot-rolled coil and push the bar on hot-rolled coil production.
