Marcus Randolph, the American Andrew Mackenzie beat to become BHP Billiton (ASX, NYSE, LON: BHP) CEO, will leave the company at the end of this week, after a brief return to work following extended sick leave.

The executive, who retired from the Group Management Committee (GMC) on May 10, was one of four executives believed earlier to become the likely successor to Marius Kloppers, until Mackenzie's appointment was announced in February.

His departure was not the only change announced by BHP today. As the No. 1 mining company in the world continues to reshape its executive ranks, it also said that BHP's human relations boss Mike Fraser has been elevated to the GMC.

The executive has been with the company since 2000, and was running BHP's Mozal aluminum business in Mozambique until taking up his current position in January.
